“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.”

WHAT WE DO

Amaras Institute is a visionary think tank dedicated to fostering economic cooperation as a means to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East and beyond.

In light of the escalating situation in the Middle East, Amaras Institute is dedicated to uncovering and advocating for innovative solutions to the region’s most pressing challenges. Recognizing the potential for shared economic and energy interests to serve as catalysts for peace and stability, our focus has sharpened on the pivotal role of natural gas discoveries in the Mediterranean, particularly off the coast of Israel. These significant natural gas reserves, including Israel’s Leviathan and Tamar fields, offer a new avenue for regional cooperation, potentially reshaping economic landscapes and fostering unprecedented partnerships.

The Leviathan Gas Field
Israel’s exploration efforts in the Mediterranean Sea have led to transformative discoveries, notably the Leviathan gas field, situated within the Levantine Basin. Identified in December 2010, with Chevron Mediterranean, NewMed Energy, and Ratio Energies as key stakeholders, Leviathan represents a major find with proven and probable gas reserves estimated at 16.27 trillion cubic feet (tcf). Production commenced in December 2019, marking a significant milestone in Israel’s energy sector.

The Karish North Exploration Field
Further compounding these discoveries, Energean has identified additional significant reserves at the Karish North exploration field, with estimates ranging between 28 to 42 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas. This adds to the 45 bcm at Karish and 22 bcm at the Tanin gas field, underscoring the region’s burgeoning potential as a major natural gas hub.

These developments not only enhance Israel’s energy independence but also present substantial opportunities for regional cooperation through energy exports. Agreements to export natural gas to Egypt and other neighboring countries illustrate the geopolitical significance of these discoveries, fostering economic links that could serve as foundations for deeper diplomatic ties.
By harnessing the potential of shared economic interests, particularly in the energy sector, Amaras Institute aims to contribute meaningfully to addressing the challenges facing the Middle East, fostering a climate of cooperation and mutual prosperity.
